The LINE GAME activity in the English class - 11.ºB

The Line Game is a very important scene in the movie “Freedom Writers”.

This game was used by Erin Gruwell, the English teacher of room 203, in order to show the students that their similarities were so much more important than what made them different. They were all problematic teenagers, with tough lives and an unpredictable future.

Because the Line Game is one of the most important and touching scenes of the movie we replicated it in our English class. It was a very interesting activity and, being a different activity from those we usually do in our classes, it marked us in a very positive way.

The Line Game was a great opportunity to become more familiar with our class and for the students to learn about each other in a non-threatening, and interactive way.

It also made us reflect and realize that although our lives are not perfect, we are very privileged teenagers because we have access to many things that other teens of our age don’t have, such as a good education and a warm house in the winter.

Playing this game was a great way to finish the study of the movie “Freedom Writers”, not only because it meant a lot for us but also because it was an opportunity to learn more English vocabulary in a funny and interesting way.

In the last week of the first term the students from class 11B performed an activity called “The Line Game”. We did it in the English class and it was based on the movie “The Freedom Writers”, on which we were “working”, after being watched in the previous classes. However, there was a difference between the scene of the game in the film and ours: the one asking the questions. In the film, it was the teacher who wrote them and then asked them to the students. In our class, each of us wrote some questions to ask the class and, afterwards, each one stood up to the line if the answer was “yes” and stayed out of the line if the answer was “no”.

The goal was, besides getting the class to reflect on what was asked, to have a more dynamic and fun class.

This game is really great because, in a way, we also get to know the reality of each of us better.
